Introduction Antique phonographs are fun, functional machines! Are you thinking of starting a phonograph collection? Did you just find one at a shop, online, or in your garage, and are trying to make sense of what it is? Have you had one in your home for some time and trying to learn more about it? This guide is intended as advice to those building a collection and looking for straightforward tips on how to judge the quality of an antique musical machine for the most value and enjoyment.
My suggestions are focused on phonographs from the acoustic era: Electric phonographs and modern wind-up reproduction phonographs are beyond the scope of this advice. Many individuals wish to acquire a phonograph in order to use it, meaning for playing actual vintage records. Others collect one or more phonographs as vintage decorative items.
Still others are particularly interested in the historical and technological aspects, and attempt to amass a variety of phonographs to represent the progression of the talking machine through different eras and styles. This guide is useful for all the above cases. Background This is an Edison Standard Phonograph, playing cylinder records.
This is a Victor P phonograph, a premium model used primarily as an incentive to customers buying many 78 rpm discs. The Victrola Orthophonic Credenza disc phonograph was built very late in the acoustic period and is prized by collectors today.

He’s superficially defending Jim’s sexual dalliances, saying no one is perfect, many celebrities did the same thing, etc. But the problem with the dozens of sexual references in Jim Reeves His Untold Story is not the extreme over emphasis on sex Jordan even shockingly refers to the size of Reeves penis! And that is the fact that Jordan did not have to tell every little sexual story, anecdote, or rumor he collected on Reeves.
He could have made his case briefly, by presenting some facts, and then moved on. He did not have to say something about sex on just about every other page in every chapter. It makes one wonder just who was obsessed with sex.

The numbering scheme is my own. However, there is some general trend to show that perhaps this is also the chronological order in which they used these designs. Uses the “Majestic Phonograph Co. Stephen C. Barr Spiral Bound, ” x 11″, pp This work is absolutely essential for anyone collecting 78 rpm recordings, regardless of type or musical genre. In this lesson we are going to review by going over two of the tunes you already know, Cripple Creek, and Fireball Mail, both based on the playing of bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs. Both Scruggs recordings are from the classic Foggy Mountain Banjo album, recorded on Columbia- which apparently is back in print, and available from Amazon. The next three Cripple Creek MP3 examples are all fiddle recordings. The lead fiddler is probably Clayton McMichen, and the singer is Riley Puckett, who had already achieved prominence as the first country music singing star.
This is a Smithsonian field recording made around , and was released on the Folkways album Traditional Music from Grayson and Carroll Counties, Virginia. The third example is a recording of the late Senator Robert Byrd, who was not only one of the most powerful politicians in America, but was also an excellent old-time fiddler. Edison’s discs cannot be played on Victrolas–I mean those wonderful cabinet machines made by the Victor Talking Machine Company. I define “Victrola” here since some people use this same term for Edison phonographs, a common mistake. Here is another crucial fact. You need a diamond stylus! Moreover, Victor products cannot be played on an Edison disc machine unless the machine has a special adapter.
Edison’s company made “lateral” soundboxes to play non-Edison discs, such as Victor 78s–Diamond Discs are called “vertical”. The Victor company never made such adapters.

The notes on this song in Cazden et al. If the second known version , in Melismata, also reprinted in Chappell were the oldest, this might be possible — there are seeming political references to “Gib, our cat” and “Dick, our Drake.
